CLINICAL USE

The CerviLenz Procedure

The CerviLenz device is a reliable way to measure the cervix. It's always available, so you can measure her cervix at a moment's notice.

GET DIRECTIONS FOR USE

  • TRIAGE OF THREATENED PRETERM LABOR: the CerviLenz procedure helps predicts the risk of imminent delivery for symptomatic patients.

  • SURVEILLANCE OF PATIENTS AT HIGH RISK FOR PRETERM LABOR: the CerviLenz procedure helps monitor for cervical shortening, every 1-2 weeks or as indicated for risk factors such as prior preterm birth, twins, maternal health complications or demographics, LEEP or cone.

  • IDENTIFICATION OF PATIENTS WITH A SHORT CERVIX: the CerviLenz procedure helps identifies high risk patients who may benefit from preventive therapy, such as vaginal progesterone, to reduce the risk preterm birth.

"Preterm birth is the leading cause of neonatal morbidity and mortality." (WHO 2009)

Professional Associations

The American Congress of Obstetricians and Gynecologists

The work of ACOG focuses on the following: serving as a strong advocate for quality health care for women; maintaining the highest standards of clinical practice and continuing education for its members; promoting patient education and stimulating patient understanding of and involvement in medical care; and, increasing awareness among its members and the public of the changing issues facing women's health care.

American College of Nurse-Midwives

The mission of ACNM is to promote the health and well-being of women and infants within their families and communities through the development and support of the profession of midwifery as practiced by certified nurse-midwives and certified midwives. ACNM provides research, administers and promotes continuing education programs, establishes clinical practice standards, creates liaisons with state and federal agencies and members of Congress. One of the valuable resources of ACNM is their free speculum training course for nurses.

Association of Women's Health, Obstetric and Neonatal Nurses

The mission of AWHONN is to improve and promote the health of women and newborns and to strengthen the nursing profession through the delivery of superior advocacy, research, education and other professional and clinical resources to nurses and other health care professionals.

The Society for Maternal-Fetal Medicine

The mission of the Society for Maternal-Fetal Medicine is to improve maternal and child outcomes and raise the standards of prevention, diagnosis, and treatment through support for the clinical practice of maternal-fetal medicine, research, education/training, advocacy, and health policy leadership. Among its services are Physician Learning Resources, Fellows Lecture Series, Research Funding Opportunities, and a Research Database. One of the valuable resources of SMFM is the SMFM State of Pregnancy Monograph released February, 2010.

The mission of the March of Dimes is to improve the health of babies by preventing birth defects, premature birth, and infant mortality. The Foundation carries out this mission through research, community services, education and advocacy to save babies' lives. March of Dimes researchers, volunteers, educators, outreach workers and advocates work together to give all babies a fighting chance against the threats to their health: prematurity, birth defects, low birthweight.

The March of Dimes offers extensive information online, including professional education, education for women about preterm labor, and support for families who experience preterm birth.

Of special note is the March of Dimes Preterm Labor Assessment Toolkit. This evidence-based toolkit supports quality improvement initiatives with resources to help healthcare professionals standardize the assessment and diagnosis of preterm labor.

From Research to Clinical Practice

A CerviLenz measurement of 30 mm or longer effectively rules out short cervix and, for symptomatic patients, represents an extremely low risk of delivery within 7 days. If her CerviLenz measurement is less than 30 mm, she may have a short cervix - that means TVU, fFN analysis, a Maternal-Fetal Medicine consult, and/or therapies such as vaginal progesterone or tocolytics may be warranted.
